In The Beginning
We longed to recreate the magic of our favorite arcade shooting games from our childhood. But there were problems – the existing light guns on the market didn’t quite capture the essence of that nostalgic experience, we didn’t own CRT TVs…who does?
Determined to bridge the gap between past and present, we embarked on a mission to invent a new light gun that would revolutionize the gaming industry. Countless hours were spent researching, prototyping, and testing different technologies to create the perfect blend of accuracy, responsiveness, and immersion. Finally, Light Guns for LCD screens and projectors are here and better than ever!
The partnership
We had already been working with 3A for the last few years. It was the perfect fit. We decided to embark on a partnership to launch the best Light Gun plug-and-play system the retro gaming market had seen.
The designs
There were a few different designs for the console and the light guns before we settled on the final version. We wanted to avoid parts that were going to break easily like slides or pumps. We wanted high quality recoil that would function at full power for the full game, even on full automatic. Most guns lose recoil power after a few seconds, not ours.
Parts broke, designs failed, ideas were crushed until all the bugs and materials required were worked out. We had to use the best quality plastics for our recoil system because it needed to endure a T2 Arcade full auto beating. And it does.
The Tests
Luckily nothing caught on fire! Except for the fire under our butts to get this into your living room. We ran tests for everything, then we tested it again, tweaked it, and tested it again. Many games tested and software updates later, we have a final product ready for all our retro gaming fans to enjoy.
The image to the left is what most light gun manufacturers use for recoil. However, this system requires a significant amount of power and doesn’t function well with full-automatic shooting. It loses power quickly, and the recoil starts to get weak. We worked directly with a solenoid company to build a more robust system that can handle fast repetition over a long period of time. We tested ours for 20+hrs straight without any issues. Simulating commercial lightgun use.
Shipping
In the beginning, our Light Gun was specifically designed to have the barrel removed during shipping. Many countries around the world do not like the importation of guns, even toy guns. Now that we have sold thousands and thousands of light guns, we have developed shipping relationships and no longer need to separate our Light Guns; they will now arrive ready to use
The Future
The Retro Shooter is also working on the Development of video and computer games and Video game development services. There is a massive community needing new Lightgun games and we are looking to fill that need here at The Retro Shooter offices!
Images for your viewing pleasure
The images below were all taken during the making of the Retro Shooter. You can see the mockup of the first design and the final one, the console designs (first design had a heat sink but we decided to go with a fan for better cooling), the mother board and various other photos taken over the last 2 years…Yes, it took 2 years to complete this project. Please excuse some of the image quality, some images were screen grabs from cellphone videos.
- Three barrel connections were tested
- We tested a metal plate on the side for the logo
- We tested a metal heat sink on the top of the console
- We had a few different gun designs
